Ranasaurus (pronounced RAN-uh-SOR-us)

Rana is a frog-lizard mutation: a frog's sticky toes and tongue on a lizard's scaly body and tail. Tame one and he rides your shoulder. Move him to your wrist and his tongue swings you through the treetops, or lashes out on its tether to spike a target or knock it out with venom, then snaps back. Hunt the wild ones and their membrane becomes a quill-covered flight suit and a Thruster Pack loud enough to crack the sky.

A whole new flight system. Glide, rocket, bank, corkscrew, dive and flare with flight that outdoes vanilla Tek tenfold. Rana on your shoulder turns the trigger into your trick trigger; Rana on your wrist makes it his tongue. Mix the two and it's a beautiful combination for some brand-new aerial fun.

The story: the ARK never meant to make him. Somewhere in its Element-soaked labs a tree frog and a climbing lizard got folded into one animal, and the mistake bred true: sticky toes, a tethered tongue, scales, and a membrane that still glows with the Element that made it. The first survivors to catch one called it Ranasaurus and started wearing the skins.

Needs Bob's Tall Tales (Rana tames like Cosmo). Controller-first, tested on Xbox. Works in multiplayer. Wild Ranas roam every map.

What you get

  • Rana: rides your shoulder, lashes anything that hurts you, glows a soft blue, breeds, and leaves Rana Paste you can brew into fuel.
  • Tongue swing and strike: on your wrist his tongue is a grapple (swing, yank, fling), or a tethered spike that lashes out and snaps back, with a knockout venom tip. Strikes refill on their own, or from Narcotics.
  • Rana suit (level 48): a wingsuit that glides fast, banks into turns, corkscrews, bullet-dives past its top speed and flares to a stop, plus a gas-mask helmet, carry gauntlets, Tek-sprint leggings and double-jump swim boots. Better-quality pieces drop from beacons and cave crates.
  • Thruster Pack (level 80): hover, rocket flight, a bullet-pose sprint to top speed, sonic boom, and a burst out of the water.

Controls (Xbox / PlayStation / PC)

  • Open or fold the wings: RB / R1 / G
  • Thrust with the pack (Rana's yank without fuel): LT / L2 / Right mouse
  • Tricks, Rana on your shoulder and wings open: hold RT / R2 / Left mouse. Add stick left or right (A / D) to corkscrew, forward (W) for a bullet dive, back (S) to flare and brake. RT alone tucks you into a bullet; with thrust it gets you to top speed faster.
  • Sonic boom while thrusting: L3 / L3 / Left Shift
  • Double jump with the boots: A / Cross / Space again in mid-air (once per jump)
  • Rana on your wrist: hold RT / R2 / Left mouse to swing, or lash the tongue out; X / Square / R switches swing and shoot
  • Rana back on your shoulder: put the Ranasaurus item away
  • Switch between Torpor tongue and Melee tongue is LT+LB/ L1+L2/ Right mouse+Caps

Server settings (GameUserSettings.ini, under [Ranasaurus])

  • MaxFlightSpeed: default 17000, range 5000 to 20000 (a bullet dive may briefly go 3000 over it)
  • RanaGlowBrightness: default 1.0, range 0.1 to 3.0 (negative turns the glow off)
  • ThrusterPackUsesJetFuel: default True (False lets the pack fly for free)
  • ThrusterPackThrustMultiplier: default 1.0, range 0.1 to 1.0
  • RanaPasteRateMultiplier: default 1.0, range 0.1 to 9.0 (1.0 = about every 3 min, never faster than every 20 s)
