Gravetail – Death Recovery Companion
Small, bad-tempered and fiercely loyal, the Gravetail is a shoulder companion created to help survivors recover from even the worst deaths.
Keep one safely on your shoulder and, should you die, your Gravetail will set out to retrieve your belongings and return them to you. However, this loyal service leaves it exhausted and needing time to recover.
Do not mistake its size for weakness. When badly injured, the Gravetail enters a furious rage and becomes a surprisingly dangerous opponent.
Where to find Gravetail
Wild Gravetails can be found roaming open grassland regions, normally around the same areas inhabited by Dodos.
Gravetail is added alongside the existing creatures in these areas and does not replace Dodos or remove any vanilla spawns.
Wild Gravetails can also enter Rage when injured, so be careful when attempting to tame one!
Taming
Gravetail is a knockout tame.
Its preferred taming food is:
Gravetail Kibble – provides the fastest tame and the best Taming Effectiveness. Spoiled Meat – can also be used, but results in a slower tame with considerably lower Taming Effectiveness.
Once tamed, Gravetail survives on Spoiled Meat.
Death Recovery
Gravetail’s main ability activates automatically when it is being carried on your shoulder.
When its survivor dies, Gravetail will:
Leave the survivor’s shoulder. Locate their death cache. Recover the belongings stored inside. Carry the items safely within its own inventory. Return to the survivor after they respawn.
This includes recoverable items from the survivor’s:
Main inventory Hotbar Equipped armour Cosmetic slots
No button or manual command is required. Gravetail must be alive and on your shoulder when you die for the recovery ability to activate.
Gravetail is protected while completing its recovery mission, allowing it to travel through dangerous areas without being killed before it can return.
Deathrunner’s Recovery
Recovering an entire death cache is exhausting work.
After returning, Gravetail will enter Deathrunner’s Recovery and fall asleep. During this recovery period:
It cannot retrieve another death cache. It cannot be picked up. It cannot be placed into a Cryopod. It must finish recovering before it can be carried again.
The survivor receives Deathrunner’s Grace, which indicates that their belongings have been returned and their Gravetail is currently recovering.
Rage
When Gravetail’s health falls below 25%, it automatically enters Rage.
During the transformation, Gravetail grows larger, changes colour and becomes surrounded by fiery smoke. While enraged, it gains:
- Increased melee damage
- Increased movement speed
- 80% reduced incoming damage
- An aggressive combat state
- Temporary resistance to survivor commands
Rage allows Gravetail to survive encounters that would normally overwhelm a creature of its size. Once Rage ends, it returns to its normal size, appearance and behaviour.
Rage has a cooldown and cannot activate continuously.
Attacks
Gravetail has two vicious close-range attacks:
Bite – a quick standard attack. Double Bite – a more aggressive two-part biting attack.
Its small size makes it difficult to hit, while its Rage ability allows it to withstand heavy punishment when cornered.
Important Information
Death Recovery only activates while Gravetail is carried on the survivor’s shoulder. Gravetail cannot perform another recovery while sleeping. Items are returned inside Gravetail’s inventory. A wild Gravetail can Rage during a taming attempt. Spoiled Meat works for taming, but Gravetail Kibble provides substantially better results. Gravetail spawns are additive and do not replace existing vanilla creatures.
Whether you need a loyal recovery companion or simply want an angry rat riding into battle on your shoulder, Gravetail is ready to follow you beyond death—and bring your belongings back with it.
